Using American Sign Language (ASL) in your Classroom

This 3-course series focuses on using the vocabulary from ASL to promote language, communication, and literacy development in early childhood education.

Topics will include... ASL vocabulary, strategies for integrating ASL into teaching, books, and games to use to support children's development.

  • This series is relevant for educators teaching in early childhood education, infants - Pre-K.

  • Building Bridges with ASL. In this course you will learn the benefits of using ASL vocabulary in early childhood.
    Topics included brain research, identifying ASL vocabulary, and creating settings that promote communication. As well as learning approximately 50 signs to integrate into your daily routines.

  • Building Language Bridges with ASL focuses on using ASL vocabulary to promote language development and communication in early childhood education.
    Topics include how ASL supports language development, building ASL vocabulary, and creating language rich learning environments. As well as 40 signs to integrate into classroom activities.

  • Building Literacy Bridges with ASL focuses on using ASL to support literacy in early childhood education.
    Topics include pre-literacy skills, expanding children's ASL vocabulary, and creating literacy-rich learning environments. As well as approximately 30 signs to integrate into your literacy activities.

Your Instructor

Jenning Prevatte is a mother of two and an Assoc Professor of Early Childhood and Elementary Education at Red Rocks Community College in Colorado.

Formerly an elementary teacher with a Master’s in Special Education with an emphasis on Early Childhood from Arizona State University, she also now provides coaching and consulting services through Teach Brilliantly.

Jenning loves consulting on the use of American Sign Language for literacy and brain development, along with supporting educators at all levels to be their absolute best. She says she is extremely grateful to work with many Education Professionals in creating highly effective relationships and learning environments to positively impact the future.
